Westfield School

Design Technology

This subject includes Resistant Materials, Food Technology and Textiles. Pupils are taught in large purpose built working areas using specialist tools where appropriate. Design and Technology prepares children to take part in the development of an ever changing world. The subject encourages problem-solving, both as individually and as part of a team. Pupils are encouraged to develop their own ideas creatively. Through Design and Technology, pupils acquire a broad range of knowledge drawing on their experiences in other subjects such as; mathematics, science, computing and art. This helps to develop their understanding of how design and technology impacts on daily life and the wider world. Pupils will have the opportunity to combine practical skills with an understanding of design. This allows them to reflect on and evaluate present and past design and technology, its’ uses and its’ impact.

Resistant Materials is taught in the Technology room where pupils benefit from a fully equipped workshop.

In Textiles pupils develop their design skills and learn to use different tools correctly. Pupils learn to sew using a combination of hand sewing and sewing machines.

The large well equipped Food Technology room is where all pupils learn about healthy living, good diets, preparing food and taste testing. We aim to help our pupils to leave Westfield with the ability to prepare and cook a complete meal.
