Science

Science is a core aspect of the curriculum. We live in an increasingly scientific and technological age where children need to acquire the knowledge, skills and attributes to prepare them for this. Wherever possible we teach science on a practical basis. Scientific enquiry is the key to raising achievement in this subject and is taught across the three sections of the science curriculum, life processes and living things, materials and their properties and physical processes. Pupils are encouraged to practice research skills and investigate techniques alongside practical experimental work.

The pupils have access to a wildlife area, which contains a pond and pond dipping platform. We run an Eco-club every Monday where we identify and raise environmental issues within the school community and initiate projects, which will benefit our pupils’. We use our greenhouse to propagate plants for science lessons and to sell them to our pupils and staff.

We believe that the teaching of science develops an interest and curiosity in children about the world in which they live and fosters a respect for the environment. Through working scientifically, children are encouraged to develop an enquiring mind; this involves participating in:

•investigations

•observations

•questioning

•making predictions

We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in our science lessons Children get the opportunity to work in our Science Laboratories as well as our Environmental Area where relevant which contains a pond and pond dipping platform. We run an Eco-club every Monday where we identify and raise environmental issues within the school community and initiate projects which will benefit our pupils’. We use our greenhouse to propagate plants for science lessons and to sell them to our pupils and staff.
